Security Officers

Mint Master Security Officers undergo a grueling and multidisciplinary training course which they must pass with full comprehension and competency before being employed by the Company.  Mint Master Security   Officers are trained at the following various levels:

Grade E – Fully trained Security Officer who has undergone a basic but comprehensive training schedule.  (Modules 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 20).

Grade D –      Fully trained Supervising Security Officer (as above and Modules 7, 12, 13 and 14).

Grade C –      Fully trained Senior Supervising Security Officer (as above and Modules 15, 17, 18 and 19).

The essential modules that are covered at the most basic and advanced levels of training are listed below.

1.         Personal Hygiene and General Appearance

Mint Master Security Officers learn the importance and relevance of personal hygiene and are able to discuss the necessity thereof.  They learn how to keep their uniforms clean and smart and therefore understand the purpose of portraying a good bearing and smart image at all times whilst on duty.  On completion of this module, all of our Security Officers are more than prepared to uphold a high standard of personal presentation in any industry. In addition to presentation, our Security Officers are disciplined in the maintenance and    preservation of their health and physical fitness.

2.         Observation

Security Officers are tutored in the importance of accurate and complete observation.  On completion of this course, all Security Officers are competent in the application of the observational patterns to describe people, vehicles and objects as well as the correct procedures of recording thereof.

3.         Guarding and Patrolling

The Guarding and Patrolling module trains the Security Officer how to list security risks which should be checked during patrols, correctly identify physical barriers and patrol monitoring systems, use cover/illumination/obstacles etc to his advantage during patrol, identify possible concealment sites on a given     premises and locate and correctly identify emergency equipment.  On completion of this module, our Security Officers are fully aware of the general procedure in the event of emergencies and are able to list unsafe acts/conditions which will create hazardous working conditions.

4.         Discipline

The aim of this instruction is to ensure that Security Officers understand the importance of foot-drills as part of the discipline of a security force and to enable them to execute the basic movements.  The object of the foot-drill is to instill a sense of instinctive obedience in the Security Officer which will assist him/her to always carry out orders in the future.  The foundation of discipline in the performance of security duties is largely based on foot-drills.

5.         Bombs, Explosive Devises and Firearms

This module enables the Security Officer to demonstrate the immediate action drill when discovering a bomb, after a bomb explosion as well as to identify the most commonly used bombs, explosive devices, suspect objects and firearms employed by adversaries.  Security Officers trained by Mint Master are taught about bomb targets, types of bombs, the chain reaction sequence, types of explosives, precautions etc.

6.         Role and Function of a Security Officer

Security is the situation that exists as a result of the establishment of measures for the protection of information, personnel and property against hostile persons, influences and actions.  The aim of this module is to ensure that all Security Officers know their role in and the principles of security in an organization.

7.         Public Relations

The Public Relations module directs our Security Officers on how to create favorable impressions with regard to dealing with people in general.  They learn how to avoid poor relations or conflict and become skilled in addressing client representatives as well as the general public.  The Security Officer will be trained in the understanding of the need for good public relations as well as how to foster and maintain a positive public image.  This module ensures that all of the Mint Master Security Officers dress smartly, have a professional attitude, communicate effectively, show concern and demonstrate good manners.

8.         Radio/Telephone Communication

In this absolutely essential module, Security Officers are taught how to effective convey messages using either radio or telephonic communication.  In order to ensure that messages are transmitted and received with speed and accuracy, radio operators must fully understand the need for radio discipline and standardized voice procedure.

9.         Self Defence

Mint Master Security Officers are trained how to physically protect themselves should the situation warrant such action.  The trainees are taught about unarmed combat and practical defenses against attack when assailant is unarmed or is using a weapon etc.  Security Officers are not only taught how to protect themselves from assault but also how to apprehend the attacker once the threat has subsided.  Security Officers cover many different techniques under this module and are encouraged to practice and are supervised during these practices to ensure that all trainee’s are confident in these skills.

10.       Legal Aspects

Our Security Officers are taught and comprehend all the relevant, basic legal aspects associated with Security Officers in common law, statutory law, law and criminal law.  Security Officers are given a basic introduction into legality (an act, unlawfulness, fault and definition of crime), private defence (definition, attack/threatening attack, defensive action, necessity and the essentials of a plea of necessity), intention (negligence, attempt and specific offences) and public violence (murder, assault and intimidation).

11.       Access Control

All Security Officers are trained to demonstrate his/her understanding of access control, reasons for applying access control, list the functions to be performed at entrance/exit control points, how and when to enforce access control, implement effective access control, learn additional measures to take to deny adversary access to the premises and measures to be taken when confronted with a visitor who proves difficult in complying with standing order which are laid down for exercising access control.

12.       Search Procedures and Techniques

Searching individuals and vehicles is a standard and crucial factor in private security.  The best and most sophisticated access control system would be of no value if searching of persons, vehicles and containers was not done on a regular basis.  Searching is therefore an unavoidable protection measure and it is vital that Security Officers are aware of the basic principles to be applied when searching for articles or objects.  Searches are done to prevent any article or object from being brought onto or being taken off the property that are not lawfully or permitted to do so. Our Grade D Security Officers are taught to demonstrate the fully detailed procedure to following when searching vehicles, the rules to apply during a search, adopt procedures for routine check of persons, areas to cover when searching persons etc.  Our Grade D Security Officers are taught the principles of searching which are in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Act.

13.       Pocket Books

Pocket books are kept by a Security Officer to assist the Supervisor in maintaining a high standard of control of all staff and to correct any deficiencies in the security system through entries made by his staff.  This module teaches the Security Officers how to provide a permanent, accurate record of hours of duty and work performed.

14.       Fire Fighting, Fire Prevention and Protection

All Security Officers are given a basic introduction on fire fighting, prevention and protection.  The topics covered include various classifications of fire risks and hazards, typical careless actions that are the cause of fires; procedures to reduce fire hazards, to implement immediate action drills in the event of fire i.e. fire drills and fire evacuation procedures as well as identify the extent of fire risk and possible resultant loss due to an uncontrolled fire.

15.       Written Reports

The aim of this module is to provide Security Officers with guidelines for effective, accurate, complete, objective, honest and descriptive report writing.  These reports are submitted when incidents are observed.

16.       The Threat (The Risk)

The aim of this module is to ensure that the Security Officer knows and understands the concepts of fraud, theft and collusion etc as well as methods used to prevent them.  At the end of the module, the Security Officer is able to identify and prevent customer and staff dishonesty.

17.       Bomb Threats

Security Officers are equipped with the knowledge and familiarization with the bomb threat call form and are taught how to complete it.

18.       Protection of Information

The aim of this module is to ensure that members safeguard and prevent confidential information from becoming known to any person who has no relevant interest to that information.

19.       Role in Emergency

Security Officers are introduced to emergency planning and evacuation procedures.  Contingency planning is directed towards the actions during an emergency and coping with the results of any emergency.  It primarily contains plans to safeguard lives, protect property and to maintain essential services.

20.       Industrial Relations

Security Officers cover the definition of Industrial Relations, trade unions, strikes and lock-outs, types of strikes, consequences of strikes, disciplinary codes, grievance procedure and conflict.  On completion of this module, Security Officers are more than equipped to deal with potential labour unrest which generally results in the loss of valuable man hours.

21.       Occupational Safety

In this module, Security Officers are taught their role in occupational safety, how to prevent accidents and what cause accidents.  On completion of this module our Security Officers comprehend and implement accident prevention through work systems that are aimed at minimizing the risk of injury.
